Thionyl, aka Tom seemed very professional and trustworthy at first. I even hired him for a second painting job in my home at the end of the first. UNTIL the final walk- through when I pointed out unpainted patches on some walls and realized that he and his workers had been painting around my furniture! He cursed me out using the 'f' bomb, saying he's not a mover to move around my furniture. Throughout the project, I kept asking him what he needed me to move and his answer was always the same, "just leave everything, we will put it in the middle of the room as we paint." He was up close in my personal space raising his voice at me. I quickly exited the room we were inspecting and gave him the final check. After he left, I found a whole closet he had not even painted despite being paid for it. He does not tape to paint straight lines either, and when asked, he claimed the reason the lines between ceiling and walls were not clean is because I didn't have crown molding. The trim he painted is shoddily done and needs a couple more coats of paint. Buyer beware before you hire T.C. Painting. He's money hungry, disrespectful and not even good at what he does!!!
This is important mostly for larger jobs. Clearly a two man operation is going to build a home much slower than a 15 man crew. This is also a good indication of the overall size of the Painting company, if that's an area of concern for you. The reason you may want to ask about the fleet is that fleet size is a good indicator of the mobility of the company. Mobility may not sound important, but it's hard for the Hartford contractors to get to job sites if they lack appropriate vehicles.
The question is great for some industries and non-applicable for others. A general contractor, for example, will by definition employ subcontractors. Most Hartford Painting companies do not, but there are exceptions. You should always ask this question to your service providers. If they do use subcontractors, ask if they're all licensed and insured independently.
This will be answered when you ask if all employees are licensed. The only way to obtain a legitimate tradesman's license is to be a legal or naturalized citizen of the US. The company may employ people in positions that don't require a license, however, so it's wise to inquire.
You'll certainly want to ask them this. Steer clear of any company that is not insured in Connecticut, because that means that any incidental damage they may do on your property will be a real hassle to recover compensation for. It is never wise to work with uninsured tradesmen of any kind. Most states also require that someone have insurance in order to be issued a trade license. If they say they're licensed but not insured, they're being less than truthful.
