It’s summer, so that means the kids are out of school again. Kids love the great weather outdoors, but every now and then it can get a little repetitive. In this case it’s time to beat the heat! So here are some summer activities for kids.

Take the kids out for a picnic. You don’t have to go far - your own backyard will do. Pack a lunch and some snacks, put down a blanket, and enjoy eating outdoors. Be sure to learn how to keep pests away from your food. Picnics are one of the best outdoor summer activities you can enjoy. Be sure to pack the following.

  • Sandwiches
  • Drinks
  • Chips
  • Dip
  • Plasticware
  • Paper plates
  • Blanket
  • Condiments
  • Cups
  • Napkins
  • Trashbags

What child would say “no” to a petting zoo? Kids love animals, and these animals are especially meant to be pet. Go for a casual pony ride, see the chickens hatching, or simply feed the goats. This ranks high on the list of summer fun ideas.

Play with the Hose or Sprinkler

Here’s where you can actually “make it rain.” By setting up the hose you can provide a fun way for your kids to cool off in the heat. Not only that, but a sprinkler can provide a fun way to play outside so you can go in and get some stuff done. Just remember to check on them periodically. Try out one of those silly sprinklers to maximize potential summer fun for kids.

Camp Out/Camp In

Another great way to have summer fun

Pitch up tents and roll out the sleeping bags, either indoors or outdoors. It’s perfectly normal for kids to want to camp out in their own backyard, and for those who can’t stand the bugs, camping indoors is also a fine idea for young kids. Short term camping is definitely up there on the best kid friendly activities. Also it will instill in your child either a love of the outdoors or just an appreciation for their bed at home.

Stargazing

A great way to get kids interested in astronomy is to simply let them gaze at the stars. This is perfect for pollution free nights in the countryside, or if one of your children has received a telescope as a recent present. If you’re a schoolteacher, this makes for one of the best summer vacation activities for students.

Board Games

Perfect for rainy days when you’re stuck inside, board games provide a way for you and your kids to have fun without resorting to television or video games. Today’s games are far more tailored to gamers than the Monopoly types of yesteryear. And they make for fun summer activities at home.

Create Your Own Story!

Get some blank pages and craft your own story together! Using images, words, and everything in between, get the kids together and nurture their inner creative spirit. These kinds of kid friendly activities could one day result in an award winning author! Or at the very least, a more creative-than-normal child.
