We are incredibly disappointed in the 3000sq ft custom home built by Joe Murphy construction. His lack of communication and inability to manage money as well as people left our home with irreparable damage. From completely having to redo all the hardwood floors, a master shower floor that doesn’t slope to the drain, doors that don’t fit and all of the upper cabinets in the kitchen are unlevel. Even after he tried to fix them. Molding is pulling away from the wall, crown molding on cabinetry is missing as are the base boards. Walls are warped and uneven. The house isn’t even 2 months old. He walked away from the job without even completing the house. He does not have the capital, nor credit, to keep the project moving thus taking longer than necessary as well as ordering supplies at more expensive suppliers because they gave him credit. Most errors could have been prevented, or repaired, if he would communicate. Many photos document his mistakes and there is a trail of documentation to support his lack of communication and poor money and subcontractor management. We are happy to share photos and information

Best Questions to Ask a Remodeler Contractor

Are you union or non-union?

This really only matters if you have a preference, but it is good to ask. If you have a strong ideological belief about unions or nonunions, it's perfectly acceptable to make a decision based on the preference.

How many contractors do you have working for you? How many vehicles are in your fleet?

This is important mostly for larger jobs. Clearly a two man operation is going to build a home much slower than a 15 man crew. This is also a good indication of the overall size of the Additions and Remodels company, if that's an area of concern for you. The reason you may want to ask about the fleet is that fleet size is a good indicator of the mobility of the company. Mobility may not sound important, but it's hard for the Hubbard contractors to get to job sites if they lack appropriate vehicles.

Do you work with subcontractors?

The question is great for some industries and non-applicable for others. A general contractor, for example, will by definition employ subcontractors. Most Hubbard Additions and Remodels companies do not, but there are exceptions. You should always ask this question to your service providers. If they do use subcontractors, ask if they're all licensed and insured independently.

Do you hire properly documented Additions and Remodels workers?

This will be answered when you ask if all employees are licensed. The only way to obtain a legitimate tradesman's license is to be a legal or naturalized citizen of the US. The company may employ people in positions that don't require a license, however, so it's wise to inquire.
