We hired JEL Construction to rebuild the foundation, create a rear entrance from basement, stucco the house and garage, and redo the masonry steps of my elderly Mother's house. The foundation has already cracked and the basement leaks again. When placing the insulation prior to adding the stucco, they removed her vents in the attic and never put them back in. This allowed black mold to build up and spread due to no ventilation. My mother had to stay somewhere else and incure the cost of someone removing the mold for 3 weeks. On top of all this, the masonry work they did on her front and back doorsteps has shifted, unleveled and broken off. This was a total botched job at a cost of over $40,000, which is unethical. To add icing on the cake, Jose stated he was out of town in South Carolina for 2 weeks and promised he would call to schedule to come out to look at the issues. Instead, he blocked our number and never showed up. We have made every attempt in order for JEL Construction to rectify the problems. As of today, all calls, website complaints, and text messages have been ignored.
This is important mostly for larger jobs. Clearly a two man operation is going to build a home much slower than a 15 man crew. This is also a good indication of the overall size of the Additions and Remodels company, if that's an area of concern for you. The reason you may want to ask about the fleet is that fleet size is a good indicator of the mobility of the company. Mobility may not sound important, but it's hard for the Hicksville contractors to get to job sites if they lack appropriate vehicles.
Always ask for references, and always check them. Keep in mind though that the only references you'll get are people who the contractor is certain will give him a good review. You'd also be well advised to check online review sources in Hicksville as well, which will give you a broader view of customer satisfaction for a given company.
You'll certainly want to ask them this. Steer clear of any company that is not insured in New York, because that means that any incidental damage they may do on your property will be a real hassle to recover compensation for. It is never wise to work with uninsured tradesmen of any kind. Most states also require that someone have insurance in order to be issued a trade license. If they say they're licensed but not insured, they're being less than truthful.
This really only matters if you have a preference, but it is good to ask. If you have a strong ideological belief about unions or nonunions, it's perfectly acceptable to make a decision based on the preference.
Many jobs in New York will require municipal permits in order to be approved by the town's inspector. It's always good to ask who will be responsible for pulling those permits, and if you'll be expected to do it. You'll almost never be told to pull your own, but knowing that Hicksville Additions and Remodels permits are required makes you appear to be a well informed customer.
