How Do You Measure Walls for Paint?

Take the correct measurements to do the math!

First of all, in order to know how much paint to buy, you need to know the square footage of the walls (or ceiling) you’re going to paint.

It’s actually quite simple to do:

  • If you’re calculating the size of a wall multiply the width by the height.
  • If you're calculating the size of a ceiling multiply the length by the width.
  • Getting a friend to help you is a great way to make sure you take accurate measurements.

The next step is subtracting the area in the room that’s not going to be painted - doors and windows. For this, you’ll need to multiply the width and height of the door (or window), then subtract that total from the total area. Lastly, divide the final number for the estimated coverage amount of the paint you choose!

In addition to that:

If you’re planning to paint an entire room, you can do the math by adding the width of each wall and then multiplying that total for the height of the walls - the number probably won’t be an exact number, so you can round up!

Tip: Most manufacturer's websites offer a calculator to help you do that math, the only thing you’ll need to do is take the measures correctly!

Quality Matters

High-quality paint makes a difference in your home improvement project - it’s easier to apply and more cost-effective. A low-quality paint would need more coats of paint, or it’d need to have a primer applied beforehand to get a better coverage. Also, it gets cracked and stained easily.

Investing in a high-quality paint is especially important if you’re upgrading a room that’s frequently used in the house - such as the kitchen or bathroom. It’s also important to use a premium paint if you have small children and animals at home! Generally speaking, you’d probably end up spending the same amount when buying the paints.

And here’s why:

It’s because the low-quality one would need more coats to be applied, so you’d probably buy a gallon or two more. Meanwhile, the high-quality paint may be a bit more expensive at first, but it’ll end with better results!
