Fall is just an amazing time of the year to get all cozy and warm at home - at least I love doing that accompanied by a good book! To make this season even better you can prepare these recipes that are just what your home needs! If you ever caught yourself wondering “how do you make your house smell like cinnamon?” (or orange, apple, pumpkin…any of these smells of fall season), then this is what you need to read!
Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. - Albert Camus
Simmer a Pot
When fall starts getting closer, you can start saving orange, lemon, and lime peels as well as apple and pear skins (instead of composting them), so you can prepare some DIY home scents on the stove! I’m a big fan of that citrusy smell around my house and if you’re also one of those people, you’ll love this recipe!
This is what you need:
- Peel from 1 lemon
- Peel from 1 orange
- 2 bay leaves
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 2 tablespoons whole cloves
And here are the directions:
- Bring water to a boil in a small saucepan.
- Add the ingredients and let it boil for about 5 minutes.
- Turn down the heat allowing it to simmer.
- Every 30 or so minutes add more water.
Essential Oils Blend
Essential oils are already a well known trick to make your home smell great all the time! And with fall coming up, it’s time to choose the right scents for the season! Just mix and combine a few drops in an essential oil diffuser and you’re all set! The fall scents essential oils can include ginger, vanilla, cinnamon, clove, pine, sweet orange, and so on.
Here are three recipes for you to try:
Citrus Spice
- 4 drops sweet orange
- 2 drops cinnamon
- 1 drop clove
Pumpkin Pie
- 2 drops ginger
- 2 drops cassia
- 2 drops cardamom
- 1 drop clove
- 1 drop vanilla
Autumn Sunrise
- 2 drops sweet orange
- 2 drops rosemary
- 2 drops ginger
- 2 drops eucalyptus
- 1 drop cinnamon
- 1 drop clove
Apple and Cinnamon Combo
A crock pot is amazing since you can keep it on all day long while not having to worry about burning down the house or having the pot run dry! If you’re a multitasker like me, this is the definitely the trick for you! That being said, the recipe to have your home smelling like a true fall day involves apples and cinnamon (yum!).
Here it goes:
- 8 apples (peeled, cored, chopped)
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoon sugar
Bring it all to a boil on low heat and allow it to stay on as long as it takes to spread the amazing scent throughout your home!
Dried Fruit Potpourri
Not only these will make your home smell great, they’ll also be pleasing to the eye! Potpourri recipes can easily vary according to your personal taste.
Here are a few ingredient ideas for you:
- Dried apple slices
- Dried orange slices
- Whole nuts
- Cinnamon sticks
- Whole cloves
- Dried rose hips
- Pine cones
- Essential oils (clove, cinnamon, orange, and pine)
Bake Apples
Any excuse for baking apples (or a delicious apple pie) is one I’ll keep around! Even though this way of spreading some fall scents through the house isn’t as long-lasting, the smell is so amazing - it’ll surely give you a warm heart and a cozy home!
Scented Pinecones
Pinecones naturally smell great, but sadly that scent doesn’t last long. However, there’s a way you can enjoy them for a long time!
And here it is:
Put the pinecones in a ziplock bag with 4 drops of cinnamon essential oil! Shake it up a little bit and let it sit for about 4 weeks. Once you open the bag, the scent will quickly fill you and your home up with fall joy!
Pumpkin Spice DIY Candles
Scented candles are a great way to keep your home smelling like fall, but sometimes they’re not as safe as we’d like with all the chemicals they put there.
The solution for this is pretty simple:
Make your own candle at home! She Uncovered has an amazing recipe for you using mason jars (great to get rid of those jars lying around your kitchen too!) and some pretty awesome photos to keep you inspired on your project as well.
